Real Phoenix Defeats Toros Mexico 4-3
First Victory As A PASL Franchise
Official Press Release by Garrett Cleverly
Phoenix, AZ (Tuesday, November 5th, 2012) - It wasn’t the prettiest victory but it got the job done, as Real Phoenix won its first game as a PASL franchise by beating Toros Mexico, 4-3.
“It feels great, it really feels great knowing we didn’t play our best and came out with a victory,” Real Phoenix Head Coach Kevin Grub said. “I’m really pleased with how our boys played tonight.”
With emotions and confidence riding sky high for the Real Phoenix players, their over anxious start in pursuit of a opening goal left them unorganized and sloppy at the start of the first quarter. Toros Mexico pounded the goal, finding empty space in the middle controlling the pace of the game. Real Phoenix was able to reorganize once the Toros wasted a set piece that Real quickly countered on, leading to a Greg Veatch goal. The first in franchise history.
“It was a slow start by us, Toros came out at a fast pace,” said Real GK Ryszard Gorski. “But we settled down in the second and battled through.”
Real closed out the first quarter with the lead but a quick start by the Toros saw them equalize the score 34 seconds into the second period.
Real kept their form and continued to push forward and took back the lead when Vastimir Davidovic found the back of the net. Paul Allen extended the lead when he scored the third goal for Real Phoenix.
“I’m most impressed with the way we hung together,” Grub said. “As soon as they scored we could of put our heads down and we started to come together.”
The second quarter ended with the Toros scoring another goal despite being a player down due to penalty.
Toros then tied the game up at 3-3 halfway through the third period. Real Phoenix answered quickly when Greg Veatch scored his second goal of the game, giving Real Phoenix the 4-3 lead.
Real Phoenix bunkered down and played stellar defense in the 4th quarter, shutting down the Toros and winning the game 4-3.
The home side and fans were happy with the result, but they also know they left wasted numerous opportunities on the field. Real Phoenix went 1-6 on the power play, and conceded a goal to the Toros when they had the man advantage.
The games MVP was Real GK Ryszard Gorski who was unstoppable for the majority of the game.
Grub spoke highly of his performance saying, “Just his attitude alone, sets him above everyone else, he’s such a professional, the other coach came to me and said we have to best keeper in the league, definitely helps having a stud in goal.”
Real Phoenix’s next game will be in San Diego on Saturday, November 10th, against the Sockers.
