Photo Gallery & Quotes: Grand Canyon University Men vs. Houston Baptist

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Grand Canyon University dropped their first Division I home match to Houston Baptist on Friday night by a score of 2-1. Unfortunately for GCU, problems which have plagued the team all year long did not rescind on this historic night for Arizona soccer. Head coach Petar Draksin was clearly not pleased with his side's performance, which resulted in the 5th one-goal loss on the season. However, these are learning lessons for a program making the difficult transition from Division II to I. If GCU was getting worked every game by a pair of multiple goals, then there would be cause for concern. But positive performances for a program looking for an identity in a new league will be huge for GCU. It's not how you start, but how you finish and for GCU it's time for the players to step up.
I also totally zoned at the match and spent more time talking to people than taking pictures. I will say this is a good thing because there aren't many opportunities for the whole AZ soccer community to come together and it is imperative that people continue to come and support the collegiate programs.
Below is a quote from Drak and a photo gallery:
(On his first ever Division I match…)
DRAKSIN: “First and foremost we are lucky our university made a decision to do that. It was a great night. Lots of people came out to show support and we want thank them from the bottom of our heart. I can't say enough thank you to the community and the people. It was a great atmosphere. We are disappointed with the result, but again I’ve been saying all season, it’s faster and stronger at Division I. We just have to get with it and adjust to it and we have to do it fast. I am proud of the guys and I can't say enough. They play their hearts out and we just need to get there.”
