Kyle Beckerman on teammate Velasquez, fans
Kyle Beckerman is a 10-year veteran in the MLS and has 18 caps for the U.S. national team. He’s seen a lot of the best players in the world in action.
And even’s he’s excited about Real Salt Lake newcomer Sebastian Velasquez.
“He’s got that lefty… whatever it is,” Beckerman said. “I can’t pinpoint it, but Messi has it, Arjen Robben, and Fabian (Espíndola) has it. They’re able to pinpoint it.”
While comparisons to Messi and Robben may be a little premature, the midfielder is set to play a big role for RSL this season. Velasquez played 89 minutes and had three shots in Saturday’s win against the Los Angeles Galaxy.
“He’s coming along,” Beckerman said. “A young player, but he’s got a lot of talent. He’s just going to get better.”
With players like Beckerman and Fabian Espindola to learn from, the first-round draft pick could earn those accolades sooner than later.
With jut two days left until Real’s home opener against the Red Bulls, Beckerman said the focus turns toward the fans.
“We’re trying to gather as many fans as we can, and not just for Real Salt Lake but for the league,” he said. “We’re all growing up together. “
Beckerman is known for his friendliness with the fans, and he said it’s all part of the job.
“It’s what we as Real Salt Lake players do,” he said. “It comes from our owner. He has this policy, you don’t turn any kid away for an autograph, or a picture.”
