Phoenix, AZ (Thursday, November 1st, 2012) - Grand Canyon University women’s soccer senior defender Angelina Miraglio and junior goalkeeper Cat Lena have been selected to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District First Team for District 8, which also includes athletes from the CCAA and Great Northwest and is selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA).
“I’m happy to see the girl’s get recognized for their off-field commitment in the classroom,” said head coach Stevie Gill. “The women’s soccer program has one of the highest cumulative GPA’s among the sports teams, so it comes as no surprise that Angelina and Cat were nominated.”
Last season, Miraglio was named Second Team All-PacWest in 2011 after serving as one of the leaders of GCU’s defense that allowed the fifth-fewest goals in the conference (28), tied for third in shutouts (6) and had the fifth-lowest goals against average (1.50). Miraglio, a Biology/Pre-Med major, has two goals on the current season, including one game-winner, and has started in each of the Antelopes’ 17 games.
Lena, a Healthcare Administration major, has started in goal in each of GCU’s 17 games this season and ranks tied for fourth in the PacWest conference with 79 saves. Lena also ranks seventh in the conference with a .782 save percentage and has recorded five shutouts, tied for fifth-most in the conference.
First‐team Academic All‐District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All‐America® Team ballot, where first‐, second‐ and third‐team All‐America honorees will be selected later this month.
